Offspring by seed

Whether the attempt is crowned with success depends to a large extent on the type of palm. Some palms do not happen very quickly, but others take up to a year for a new plant to develop from the seed.

In addition to a little patience, you will need:

  • Palm seeds, which you can obtain from palm growers or specialist retailers.
  • One with Potting soil filled vessel.
  • A warm, bright spot on the windowsill.

Then do the following:

  • Soak seeds in water for a few days.
  • Because of the long germination time in guaranteed pest-free substrate like Perlite(€ 39.50 at Amazon *) or place Koko-Hum.
  • Put the very large coconuts with the three germination points facing down in a large pot so that the upper half protrudes from the substrate.
  • Put a transparent plastic bag over the plant pot.
  • Keep well moist and ventilate daily to prevent mold and rot.
  • Put in a very warm place. Palms that thrive in cooler regions also germinate at room temperature, whereas tropical species require significantly warmer temperatures.

Propagate palm trees by side shoots

This only works with very few species, namely those that form lateral rungs. If these four have their own fronds, you can cut them off with a sharp knife in the spring and cut them into a small one with Palm soil filled, insert pot.

Cover up the offshoots with a plastic bag to create a greenhouse climate and place the small palm tree in a bright, warm, but by no means fully sunny place. The optimal temperature is around 22 degrees. Don't forget to ventilate daily.

As soon as the little palm leaves another frond, you know that your efforts have been crowned with success. Roots have formed and the plastic bag can be removed.

Share palm trees

Many indoor and garden plants can be propagated with this method. Unfortunately, this is not the case with palm trees, as only one main shoot grows out of the root ball. Above the trunk, which is formed by the dead and fallen leaves, is the palm heart with the tufted fan or pinnate leaves that give the plants their characteristic appearance.

Even cuttings cannot be cut from the palm and attempts to propagate the plant in this way are unfortunately pointless.

Tips

You can also obtain seeds yourself as palm fruits, for example from dates offered for consumption. Another great way to get seeds is on vacation. Collect fallen fruits and take the seeds from them that you will plant in the soil at home.
