Harvest white cabbage properly

When it is harvested, it is decided how long your white cabbage will keep. Most of the time, the earlier you harvest your cabbage, the less storable it is. Late varieties that are not harvested until late autumn have the longest shelf life.
It is also important that the leaves are not damaged during harvest, because interfaces are the first to spoil. To keep your cabbage fresh for a long time, you should proceed as follows when harvesting:

  • Pull your cabbage and roots out of the ground or cut it off just above the ground with a sharp, clean knife. Then remove the roots from the soil.
  • Remove the roots (but not the stalk!) And particularly dirty, damaged or pitted outer leaves.
  • Tap off any loose dirt and rub sand and other dry things off with a hand or a cloth.
  • In no case, do not wash your cabbage if you plan to store it outside or in the refrigerator.

Store white cabbage on the balcony or terrace

When it's cool outside, an outdoor location is also a good option for temporary storage. Put your cabbage in a tightly closed container so that it does not fall victim to any animals. Make sure, however, that it does not freeze. If your cabbage has got frost anyway, you can still eat it, but it shouldn't undergo several sharp temperature changes.
