What is a tiller?

This device is a hoe powered by gasoline or an electric motor, which is pushed over the area like a lawnmower. It performs the same tasks as the harrow and plow in agriculture, i.e. the device digs the ground in coarse clods about 15 centimeters deep with rotating hoe stars. The removed material is crushed and worked under and serves to improve the soil.

The method

1. Step: remove intermediate growth

It is important that before the seeds ripen, you have to Garden tiller(€ 124.99 at Amazon *) to grab. If the weeds have already run out, you would work in all the seeds and would have to laboriously weed the germinating weeds again and again.

To prevent injuries, you should always wear safety shoes, clothing and gloves when handling the tiller. Safety glasses can also make sense, especially on stony ground.

To use it, do the following:

  • Remove or fold down the transport rollers.
  • Adjust the working depth according to the root depth of the weeds.
  • Start the tiller at maximum power and reduce it if necessary.
  • The tiller has a forward and, for maneuvering, reverse gear.
  • Let the device run in a relaxed manner and do not pull it backwards or push it down.
  • Run it over the site in slightly overlapping paths.
  • Since the weeds are finely chopped up, no reworking is required.

2. Step: Let the ground rest

If you would like to sow lawns or create beds, you should never do this immediately after milling. Give the earth some time to sit down. In this, the soil life that has gotten into disorder can calm down again.

After a reasonable period of rest, you can mechanically weed occasional regrowing weeds and start planting the garden.

Tips

For a one-time use, the expensive purchase of a garden tiller is usually not worthwhile. However, you can borrow the device inexpensively from many hardware stores.
