time
Privet can be planted in autumn or spring. In October there are often rainy conditions, which means that the young plants grow better. Pay more attention to regular watering after winter when spring is too dry. So that the root ball does not dry out, you should choose an overcast day for planting, or plant the wood in the evening hours.

Location
The ornamental wood has no special location requirements. If the pH value is in the slightly alkaline range, it grows particularly well. The shrub prefers sunny locations and also thrives in partially shaded conditions. In a shady location, there is a great risk that the plant will become bald over time. Waterlogging quickly leads to rot, which is why privet feels more comfortable on well-drained soil.
planting
There are no special considerations when planting privet. Bare roots should be watered before planting. Place the wood in a bucket filled with water for two to three hours. Meanwhile, dig a planting hole whose volume is twice as large as that of the root ball.
Rest of the procedure:
- Mix excavated material with manure or compost
- Pour part of the mixture into the pit
- Insert the root ball so that its upper edge is flush with the ground level
- Fill the remaining soil in the space in between
- Press the substrate lightly
- Shape a 15 to 20 centimeter high pouring rim
- Give five to ten liters of water per plant
Tips
You should remove weeds within a 50 centimeter radius and keep that area weed-free for the next three years. This makes the privet grow better because it doesn't have to compete for nutrients.
What should I put attention on?
If the root ball is through a Burlap sack(€ 14.29 at Amazon *) or cardboard is protected, it is advisable to plant it soon. If this is not possible due to unfavorable weather conditions, you must ensure regular watering. With potted plants, the substrate does not dry out as quickly. Remove wire mesh and pots before inserting. Jute nets or cardboard boxes later decompose in the earth.
