The climbing trumpet loves the warmth
Young plants of the climbing Trumpet flower (Campsis) should be protected with straw or brushwood in winter due to their sensitivity to frost, but later the plants can also tolerate winter temperatures of around minus 15 degrees Celsius. A sunny location without waterlogging in the root area ensures between July and September numerous flowers in the characteristic trumpet shape: the following factors may be to blame if the Trumpet flower does not bloom:
- The plant is too young (trumpet flowers do not bloom until the 4th Year)
- it was fertilized with nitrogen
- there is a lack of young shoots (if there is no pruning)
Interesting facts about caring for the trumpet flower
Since the trumpet flower only blooms on the new shoots (from the same year), flower formation should be stimulated by pruning each year. This must already take place in February; in summer, apart from removing faded flowers, no pruning of the trumpet flower should be carried out.
Tips
With a climbing frame, the trumpet flower can reach impressive dimensions. Therefore, during the summer months, ensure that there is sufficient water supply and, if necessary, that the root area of the plant is shaded.
