Reasons for the popularity of everlasting species

Everlasting flowers are so popular without gardening for a reason. After all, these are plants whose rather inconspicuous base is usually crowned by relatively large and colorful flowers. Everlasting flowers with showy flowers

The following species of everlasting flowers produce relatively large and showy flowers that are well suited for use in dry bouquets:

  • Folded Strawflower (Helichrysum plicatum)
  • Garden everlasting flower (Helichrysum bracteatum)

These are frost-sensitive species that usually have to be raised from seeds every year. The cultivation of these everlasting flowers is not only possible around the outdoor bed, but also well in pots on the terrace and on the balcony. It can be beneficial for the flowers of these species if side shoots close to the ground are removed from the plants after they have been planted in their final location. This allows the plants to direct all of their energy into the main shoots and flowers.

Everlasting species with special characteristics

In many gardens today there are also species of the everlasting flower that at first glance might not even belong to this plant genus. A good example of this is the so-called curry herb (Helichrysum italicum). In contrast to some other everlasting species, this is perennial, but also sensitive to frost. While older specimens have a winter outdoors in regions with a mild climate with a certain winter protection can certainly survive, young plants in pots should be placed in a cool and dark cellar for the winter will. You should also overwinter the so-called licorice herb (Helychrisum petiolare) in the cellar so that it can grow into a cushion-like subshrub over several years.
