The ideal location for giant leeks
The giant leek (bot. Allium giganteum) loves the sun. He should have it on his Location Get as much as possible. Incidentally, the giant onion shares this preference with most other types of ornamental onion. Only the Golden leek and the wild garlic used as a useful plant can tolerate one planting in the Penumbra pretty good.

The nature of the soil
Not only a lot of sun, but also the right soil contribute to a lush flowering of your giant leek. It should be rather dry to slightly damp and well drained. If the conditions are ideal, the giant leek multiplies all by itself.
The planting
The onion of the giant leek should be placed about eight inches deep into the soil (about three times as deep as the onion is high). To do this, dig a corresponding planting hole. If the soil is not permeable enough, put some sand or gravel in the hole. A layer five centimeters thick will do just fine.
A little compost, which you also put in the planting hole, serves for a good supply of nutrients and easier growth. Put the spring onion in, fill the hole with soil and water the leek well. Ideally, you should plant your giant onion in autumn.
Combine giant onion with other plants
The giant leek works particularly well in combination with other plants that are color coordinated. Ornamental grasses are also suitable as neighbors. Above all, choose plants that love the sun, just like the giant onion, and that have similar water needs.
The essentials in brief:
- as sunny as possible
- well-drained, rather dry soil
- plant in autumn
- Planting depth: approx. 20 cm
- If necessary, create a 5 cm thick drainage
- put some compost in the planting hole
Tips
With the right accompanying plants, the giant onion really comes into its own. At the same time, you hide the leaves, which turn yellow relatively early.
