Young trees need winter protection

Freshly planted as well as trumpet trees younger than five years are not yet sufficiently established in their location and are not sufficiently hardened for the typical Central European winter. This hardening takes place only with increasing age, so that young trees should definitely be protected from frost and other weather-related adversities. In addition to frost, excessive moisture can also become a problem - especially if a damp period is followed by a frosty period, whereupon the swollen bark freezes and finally breaks. Against this, only the whitening of the trunk helps. Further protective measures consist of sheathing the trunk and crown with gardening fleece or Reed mats.

Trumpet tree really white

Before whitening the trunk, you should first carefully clean it of moss and lichen and apply a good wound closure agent. Then the tree is painted with a special plant-friendly paint. Alternatively, straw and reed mats also protect against excessive solar radiation.

Protect trumpet trees in the bucket

Cuttings and younger trumpet trees can be cultivated in the bucket, although this should not be left outside if possible. Since planters naturally contain little soil, the roots are not adequately protected from frost and can therefore freeze back. It is better, however, to overwinter these specimens frost-free but cool. But you can also try to pack both the pot and the tree well, place them on a thick styrofoam pad and push them close to a warm house wall.

Tips

Older trumpet trees in particular can be prepared for winter by doing this clear in time in August and remove sick, weak and dead wood.
