Garbage cans stink. That is why they are always the cause of arguments and arguments. We explain where rubbish bins have nothing to do and where they are correctly placed.
Legal framework
First and foremost, of course, are the unchangeable framework conditions in terms of the location of the garbage can - i.e. the legal requirements. Unfortunately, the regulations of the following areas of law relating to garbage cans are subject to the regulatory horizon of the countries and can therefore vary from country to country:
- State building regulations
- Zoning plan
- Local statutes
- Immissionsschutzgesetz or -regulation
- Neighborhood law
- etc.
In specific individual cases, the respective municipality is a well-suited contact point for information on the most common regulatory horizons on the subject of garbage cans.
NOTE: Legal requirements can prohibit certain locations as well as designate areas for a permissible installation location!
Meaningful legal recommendations
Although this provision has not found its way into all state laws, you can heed a basic rule for your garbage cans to avoid the worst difficulties Skilfully circumnavigated: Keep your barrels at least 2.00 meters or more away from windows in common rooms, i.e. bedrooms, living rooms or Children's rooms. Because many state building regulations are based on the federal model building regulations and specify precisely this distance for so-called "dung sites". Of course, a garbage can cannot be compared one-to-one with an agricultural dung heap. The law, on the other hand, does not see any differences and takes the domestic garbage cans with it.
TIP: This determination is primarily aimed at protecting the neighbors in your own house or on the neighboring property. Ideally, you should also take the distances to heart in your own house to keep unpleasant smells and flies away from the living spaces!
Practical chosen locations
In addition to the legal framework, there are of course also purely practical aspects that define the ideal location for your garbage cans. Unfortunately, however, it is always necessary to weigh up opposing aspects and give preference to the individually more weighty topic:
distances
- Throw in the garbage as close as possible to the house for easy accessibility
But also:
- Close to the road for short distances on the day of emptying
- Minimum distance to the house due to odor nuisance
Accessibility and accessibility
- Easy access for uncomplicated disposal
- Therefore, a location that is as open as possible without additional doors, flaps, etc.
But also:
- Not very visible area, due to dirt and generally not very attractive bins
- difficult access for (wild) animals to organic waste
- Shading against excessive heating of the garbage (fermentation, odor formation, spread of insects, etc.)
ventilation
- well ventilated area against intense odor development
- Ideally, the location can be ventilated on all sides to prevent overheating in summer (odor nuisance, insect multiplication, fermentation of organic waste)
But also:
- optically motivated separation
- no location in the main wind direction to the terrace, seating area, kitchen / living room window etc. (Odor nuisance)
Explained using the example
For example, a location directly at the house entrance is not predestined to avoid odor nuisance as best as possible and at the same time to be as invisible as possible. On the other hand, a location that is difficult to see often makes it difficult for the containers to get to the street. In some cases it may even happen that certain requirements for the "perfect" barrel storage space are based on the local Conditions simply cannot be fulfilled, be it because of the development, the topography or simply because of a tightly dimensioned Property.
Alternative approaches
In these cases it is important that the containers are optimally designed for the benefit of all surrounding residents. Garbage bins offer good opportunities to compensate for location disadvantages:
Enclosures
Lateral enclosures create the desired seclusion and also make it more difficult for all kinds of unwelcome animal visitors to access the garbage.
Overlaps
Covers in the form of roofs also help to create "invisible" garbage cans on the one hand, but at the same time reduce solar radiation and thus the development of bad smells.
Greening
Supplemented by greenery, ventilation openings can also be created in garbage bins or enclosed storage areas, which visually disappear behind loose vegetation. Well-chosen plants are sometimes even able to mask unwanted garbage smells.
