Mother plant and child separate at the right time - this is how it works

When small aerial roots and leaflets sprout along a strong pseudobulb instead of a bud, patience is required first. The longer a child stays connected to its mother plant, the stronger it starts into the orchid life. You can read here how to recognize the right point in time and how to properly carry out the severance cut:

  • A Offshoot cut with several aerial roots and at least 2 leaves
  • Wait until the lower part of the bulb begins to turn yellow
  • Cut the child 2 cm below the aerial roots

By cutting off the daughter plant with a small piece of the bulb, the chances of further growth improve. A disposable scalpel from the pharmacy has proven itself as a cutting tool for precise cutting. Here it can be largely ruled out that there are pathogens on the blade.

Planting and caring for Kindel - How to do it right

When cut at the ideal time, the child of a Dendrobium nobile has all the characteristics of its mother plant. The maintenance program after the pruning is primarily aimed at the rapid growth of additional roots and leaves. This is how it works:

  • Potting the Kindel in finely crumbly pine bark soil or a mix of coconut fibers and expanded clay
  • Spray the substrate and offshoots with soft water
  • In a heatable Mini greenhouse(€ 25.14 at Amazon *) or maintain under a transparent hood
  • Set up in a partially shaded location at temperatures around 25 degrees Celsius

Do not use fertilizer until fresh shoots of new leaves and aerial roots develop. Instead, spray the young plant regularly and ventilate it daily. Once the daughter plant has completely rooted the nursery pot, the change to a transparent cultivator pot is on the agenda. From now on you care for the young grape orchid like an adult plant.

Tips

If a child is still two years after propagation not blooming, it usually lacks the winter temperature reduction for flower induction. Dendrobium orchids only develop their buds when the temperatures are reduced by 5 degrees Celsius from October compared to the previous room temperature.
