Problematic wasp nests

Especially the socially living wasps that form large states can become a problem for us humans. On the one hand, they are very numerous and present, especially in late summer, and can be quite annoying. On the other hand, nests that have been built in and around the house are sometimes critical for house use. The main problematic and must be removed are:

  • Wasp nests in the attic
  • Wasp nests in the roller shutter box

Relatively uncritical: Wasp's nest in the attic

A wasp's nest does not actually cause any significant damage in niches in roof trusses. Slight damage to the framework and wasp excrement can occur, but none that would affect the load-bearing functions in any way. In addition, only those wooden beams are affected by gnaw marks, which are already a bit rotten anyway - despite them strong mouth tools, fresh, superficially solid wood is too hard for the wasps to collect Nest building material.

Can remove or you should still use the orphaned nest in winter. There is no risk of resettlement next spring, because the overwintered young queens usually look for a new location. However, in this way you can prevent other insects from nesting in the abandoned brood chambers and causing problems for themselves.

After removing the remains of the nest, you should B. clean with vinegar cleaner so that young queens of another country do not perceive a familiar smell of their own species and feel invited to the settlement. To prevent resettlement even more effectively, you can rub the area with clove or lavender oil.

Somewhat more critical: in the roller shutter box

A wasp's nest in the roller shutter box is usually necessary because it can impair the function of the roller shutter. The removal is of course a little more complex because the roller shutter box has to be opened. The same rules apply for removal and cleaning as for the case in the attic. In order to prevent other wasps from finding their way back into the roller shutter box, you should pay attention to any cracks in the plaster when cleaning and seal them.
