Fridge next to stove and oven: yes or no?

In general, the refrigerator should not be placed directly next to sources of heat such as a stove or oven. However, this aspect often cannot be avoided in small kitchens. Therefore, a close installation can be implemented under certain conditions.

Problematic combination

Nowadays there is an acute lack of space in many kitchens. Because of this, planning a new kitchen or renovating an old one is extremely difficult. That's why in some cases I can't avoid the fact that different electrical devices are right next to each other. So the question quickly arises whether

the refrigerator can be installed right next to the stove and oven. However, the increased temperatures of the oven in particular influence the operation of the refrigerator in the long term, so that certain problems arise from this fact.
  • Heated oven warms the refrigerator
  • More cooling energy is required to compensate for heat
  • Exhaust air from the two devices can mix and accumulate
  • When the refrigerator is opened, warm air is drawn in from the oven while it is running
  • The refrigerator compensates for this by switching it on more frequently and increasing its output
  • Constant heat radiation minimizes the refrigerator's energy efficiency
  • Has a negative impact on the service life of the cooling devices

Note: Operated hotplates radiate much less heat than the oven, and this is also given off at the top. In contrast, the heated oven also emits heat to the sides.

Correct kitchen planning

Modern electrical appliances are now both well insulated and insulated. Therefore, the mutual influence of the refrigerators with the stove and oven is now relatively minimal. Compared to older models, the risk of excessive heating of the refrigerator has been extremely reduced in practice. In the past, the penetration of warm air ensured that the food in the refrigerator would spoil more quickly. That is no longer the case today. This is why the two devices can be used directly in new kitchens

stand next to each other if the space does not allow otherwise. However, this leads to additional consumption of cooling energy.
Fridge - oven stove

In addition, the exhaust air from the two devices must be taken into account when planning the kitchen.

  • A distance of 1 to 2 meters between the devices is ideal
  • In addition to the oven, the refrigerator consumes around 10 EUR more per year
  • Modern refrigerators are extremely powerful
  • Quickly compensate for the ingress of warm air
  • Warm exhaust air must not accumulate
  • Pay attention to correct drainage during assembly

Tip: In the case of very old and only slightly insulated refrigerators, it is worth buying a new model with a lower power consumption if the device is to be placed next to an oven.
