Period of flowering: May to June

The main flowering time for the Columbine is in May. Depending on the variety, the flowers are usually present until June. If the flowers have not shown up by then, it could be because the Columbine often only blooms in the second year. So wait patiently before 'throwing the gun in the grain'!

What do the flowers look like?

The flowers are on long and thin stems. You stand high up and nod. They are composed of two circles of petals, among others. While the inner circle is pointed backwards, the outer circle is turned upwards. The flowers can have the following colors:

  • White
  • pink
  • purple
  • blue
  • yellow
  • orange
  • burgundy
  • two-tone

Cut back after flowering

After flowering is over, the leaves turn yellow. The Columbine is approaching its end of vegetation this year. Hence, the time has come for them cut back. With luck, new flowers will emerge by autumn.

If you want to prevent the columbine from self-sowing after flowering, you should cut the flowers in July at the latest. Otherwise the Seeds which ripen from July / August and after drying are scattered in the capsule fruit.
