What is the difference between quicklime and sod lime?

Quicklime is obtained by burning carbonate of lime. Lawn lime on the other hand is a mixture of quick and unburned lime. The more quicklime it contains, the more caustic the lime appears. Both can be used against moss, but quicklime is not necessary in most cases, but it is always dangerous to handle.

Is quicklime suitable for the home garden?

Since quicklime has a caustic effect, it should only be used by specialists. In the hands of laypeople and in the home garden, where children and animals romp on the lawn, it has no place.

How do I properly scale my lawn?

Before you even lime the lawn, you should determine if this is really necessary. With a Soil analysis you can easily determine the exact pH. If this value is below 7, then the soil is acidic and can be improved with lime. Also the growth of Moss in the bed or turf indicates an acidic pH.

It is best to lime the lawn in autumn, so the lime can dissolve many nutrients from the soil by next spring. If the soil is particularly heavy, you can combine liming with scarifying and, if necessary, mix sand into the limestone. This loosens the soil even more.

If you choose to lime in the spring, you shouldn't do the lawn at the same time or shortly afterwards fertilize. This reduces the benefit of both measures because not all nutrients are dissolved.

The most important information about quicklime in brief:

  • is corrosive
  • does not belong in the hands of laypeople
  • should not be used in the home garden
