The lamp cleaner grass hibernates for a long time

Pennisetum is one of the "warm season grasses" that grow green stalks very late. Depending on which region they live in, takes place budding only at the beginning of May. So, especially in rough locations, you have to be patient and not think too early that the ornamental grass has not survived the winter.

Preparation for the new gardening season

The late budding in spring also has an impact on care:

  • Do not shorten Pennisetum in autumn, only in spring.
  • Tie the grass in tufts and leave the leaves and inflorescences on the plant. As a result, the foliage protects the heart from the cold and wet.
  • In late spring, shortly before you see the young shoots, cut the dried stalks about a hand's breadth above the ground.
  • Wear gloves when doing this, as the edges of the leaves are often razor-sharp.

The pruning in spring also prevents the fresh shoots from getting caught in the dead leaves. They would then continue to grow poorly and could be damaged if you try to loosen the withered leaves from the new shoots.

The lamp-cleaning grass does not bloom until late in the garden year

In contrast to the cold-season grasses, which include fescue species, for example, you can only expect blossoms with pennon cleaner grass in high or late summer. The false panicles outlast the winter months and provide attractive accents when there is almost nothing else in the garden in bloom.

Tips

The dense foliage of the feather bristle grass and the flowers covered with hoarfrost look extremely decorative in winter. However, Pennisetum is also valued by hedgehogs and many other garden dwellers as winter quarters and thus fulfills important ecological aspects.
