This is how summer breeding with cuttings succeeds
At the time of fruit formation, life in the crabapple pulsates right down to the tips of the shoots. The months of June and July are therefore ideal for propagation with head cuttings. This is how it works:
- Cut cuttings under a leaf knot with a length of 10-15 cm
- Defoliate the lower branch area, remove flowers, buds and fruits
- Insert cuttings in pots with moist peat sand or emaciated potting soil

Put a plastic bag over each jar. Wooden sticks act as spacers to prevent contact between the film and the cutting. In the partially shaded, warm location, keep the substrate slightly moist and ventilate the cover daily.
Propagate ornamental apples in winter with cuttings - this is how it works
Immediately after the leaves have fallen, you can cut the desired number of cuttings. Pencil-length, annual twigs with a bud on each end are ideal. You put these in a fine crumbly bed in a partially shaded, sheltered location in the garden. Please make sure that no more than a quarter of the cuttings can still be seen. It continues as simple as this:
- Water the cuttings bed when it is dry
- Do not give fertilizer until the first budding in spring
- The young ornamental apples at a height of 15-20 cm are cut once for a bushy growth
It is advantageous for rooting if you cover the bed with fleece or a mat from the middle / end of February Polytunnels.(€ 5.80 at Amazon *) Pay attention to constant soil moisture, because drought inevitably puts an end to young plant life. Once your pupils have reached a height of 10 cm, the protective hood can be removed again. By autumn, strong young trees have developed that you can find in the desired location plants.
Tips
The decorative apples linger on the tree for so long that the winter sometimes puts a snow cap on them. This is not only nice to look at, but also makes your feathered garden dwellers immensely happy. So please leave at least part of the non-toxic Fruit hangings as a valuable source of food for birds.
