How do you recognize voles?

With their dark button eyes, the 12 to 22 centimeter long body and the silky, gray-brown fur the vole an admittedly sweet lodger. If it weren't for their voracity, because to the chagrin of many garden owners, they prefer to feed on roots and tubers and can thus damage the plants so much that they even die.

Mounds of earth scattered throughout the garden can come from voles, but a mole could also be responsible for the unwanted redesign of the green area. Take a close look at the embankment: if a water vole was accessed, the entrance is on the side, while a mole creates its entrance in the middle.

Uncover the aisle. If a vole lives here, it will close it again after a very short time. The more pragmatic moles, on the other hand, simply build a new passage.

Which remedies help against rodents?

There are various options here, all of which are ecologically compatible.

noise

Water voles don't like loud noises at all. For example, you can plug small wind turbines into the ground, where even a mild breeze makes a nut rattle. Devices that emit ultrasonic waves are also helpful.

Smells

The annoying root eater have a very sensitive nose, which certain scents do not like at all. Which includes:

  • The manure of thuja, spruce or elder,
  • Thuja and walnut branches,
  • fermented buttermilk,
  • Garlic,
  • Denatured alcohol,
  • Herbal oil.

Drip or stick the environmentally friendly agents directly into the aisle.

Your pet's hair

Dog and cat hair are suitable. These give off the intense scent of an enemy that the voles evade.

Promote natural enemies

This includes not only cats, but also:

  • Fox,
  • Mouse weasel,
  • Marten,
  • Polecat,
  • Owl,
  • Birds of prey.

Offer the beneficial insects a corner with dead wood and erect fences so that foxes and cats can pass them.

Defense plants

Not only certain smells in the corridor of the mouse dwelling work against the uninvited guests, the animals also avoid some plants. These are for example:

  • Imperial Crown,
  • Milkweed,
  • Garlic,
  • Daffodil.

Vole traps

Please do not use snap traps, which cause the rodents a painful death. Instead, use live traps that are equipped with baits such as carrot, celery or Jerusalem artichoke pieces. Release the trapped animals far away.

Tips

Handle the traps and the diced vegetables only with gloves. Water voles are extremely clever and can no longer be caught if they smell human beings.
