Pineapple plants form roots in two places

The pineapple plant is not only one of the few bromeliads that thrive in the ground (terrestrial). It also has the rare talent of allowing roots to sprout from the leaf axils of its crown. In this way, the plant assimilates water and nutrients that collect in the leaf rosette. Clever hobby gardeners know how to use this attribute when they want to plant a pineapple. A tuft of leaves takes root in no time at all

In order for the plan to work, you need a fresh, maturity Pineapple. Make sure that the fruit has not been refrigerated during transport. These specimens are sold under the name "Flugananas". Examine the leaves carefully. The foliage should be lush green and without a trace of mold. How to proceed:

  • Use a sharp knife to cut off the crown of the leaves together with 3 centimeters of pulp
  • Remove the bottom two or three rows from the circular leaves
  • Carefully remove the pulp with a spoon
  • the shoot points on the stalk must not be damaged, because this is where the tuft will take root

In an airy place, lay out the stalk to dry for some time. Then fill a glass with lime-free water. Put the leaf tuft in it so deep that the water does not reach the leaves. You can now watch the pineapple rooting in the partially shaded, warm window seat.

Plant them skillfully

When the young roots have reached a length of 8-10 centimeters, it is time to plant. Fill a pot half full with lean substrate, such as unit soil or cactus substrate. A hand full Quartz sand(€ 15.15 at Amazon *) or Expanded clay(€ 16.36 at Amazon *) creates the desired permeability. Form a fist and create a small hollow. Insert the rooted leaf crown into it and fill the substrate up to the lower row of leaves. After pouring, place the vessel in the light location at temperatures of 25 to 30 degrees Celsius.

Tips & Tricks

The leaf crowns of pineapple plants root even faster if you fill the water glass with willow water. The natural growth hormones in it visibly force the process. You can easily make willow water yourself from divided annual willow branches that are poured over with boiling water. Let it steep for 24 hours and strain.
