When are coconuts harvested?

Coconuts come in handy all the year long over harvested. As a rule, they are not quite ripe when they are harvested, but green and soft. They then still contain a lot of the refreshing Coconut water, namely up to half a liter. Coconuts that fall from the palm tree by themselves are often spoiled or fermented, similar to windfalls, which are already overripe.

Where are coconuts harvested?

Most of the coconuts that we sell come from great cultures in Brazil, the Dominican ones Republic, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, the West Indies, the Philippines or the Ivory Coast. In the meantime, coconut palms are no longer grown exclusively on huge plantations in monocultures, but are also already controlled organically according to ecological standards in smaller mixed cultures.

How are coconuts harvested?

the Coconut harvest is not that easy, but there are several options. Mostly, knives are used on poles several meters long for harvesting. This is how you can harvest from the earth. Or the harvesters climb the coconut palms to harvest. A good climber can harvest up to 40 palm trees a day.

Another variant of the harvest, which is common in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, is the use of trained macaques. The leashed monkeys climb the palm trees and turn the coconuts around their own axis until they fall down. The macaques are much more agile and skillful than humans, which means that fewer accidents happen.

The training of the macaques is very difficult, because the monkeys learn to react to calls and are not allowed to get caught with their lines in the palm tree. This makes them valuable workhorses for the local population. If the monkeys lose the fun of the coconut harvest, then they may no longer work properly and lose value.
