What to know about wasps

Wasps love sweet and savory food

The wasps that are so annoying to us at the garden table are only a fraction of the huge family of wrinkled wasps. As a rule, it is Germans and common wasps who so boldly and tirelessly dispute our food. These types are mainly made up of the following foods:

  • Sweets - jams, ice cream, icing pieces, fruit
  • Hearty - meat, fish (especially raw)

So it's no wonder that the critters pounce on our table, especially when they are having breakfast, drinking coffee and barbecuing. So precautions are particularly important with these meals.

Wasps have a fine nose

Wasps have a very keen sense of smell, with which they can perceive suitable food from a great distance. As a result, they are quickly attracted by a table full of goodies, even from afar.

What should I do?

When it comes to the wasp plague at the table, home remedies are often propagated that are supposed to represent an odor barrier for the wasps. In fact, the animals perceive herbaceous, ethereal smells such as lavender, lemon verbena, basil, clove oil or

Frankincense plant as repulsive. However, such remedies do nothing to counteract the temptation of sweet, nutritious delicacies. Especially in their most active phase from August onwards, the workers are simply far too hungry to be deterred from easily accessible food sources by slightly unpleasant smells.

At most, smoking wasp repellers such as glow coils or fragrance lamps can have a certain effect.

Unfortunately, the only thing that is really effective is also a bit annoying: All the tempting foods and drinks should be consistently covered so that the fragrance molecules do not get into the air in the first place permit. So the wasps may not even notice anything about your meal.

If wasps appear at the table, try to catch them with a drinking glass and keep them locked in while you eat. This will prevent her from informing her colleagues about the fat prey and further hordes from humming along. After clearing up, don't forget to release the wasp!
