When does liming make sense?

Lime is not absolutely necessary for compost

Lime is primarily used to deacidify an over-acidic soil and to ensure a favorable pH value. It only releases a small amount of nutrients. In fact, lime can deacidify very acidic compost. However, you should only use lime in the compost very sparingly, if at all.

For example, a very acidic compost is created because you are mainly Lawn clippings, Leaves and fruit bowls on it.

It is also cheaper for the smallest organisms in the compost to do the liming later when the soil is planted. For this you should have a soil sample examined beforehand to find out for sure whether the earth is actually too acidic.

Lime for cutting lawn in compost

Which lime is suitable for compost?

Algae lime is best suited for compost, as this type of lime is very fine and porous and therefore absorbs acid well. If you don't want to do without the lime, sprinkle a few handfuls of the lime over the compost heap from time to time. It is essential that you follow the quantities on the packaging.

Calcium cyanamide, as recommended occasionally, should not be given under any circumstances. This can keep weeds in check, but they are so corrosive that even the smallest organisms are destroyed.
