Why French beans don't need climbing support

French beans reach a height of no more than half a meter and - as their name suggests - grow bushy. They also do not form loops to pull themselves up. Therefore, a climbing aid for French beans is absolutely superfluous. If you want to green a wall or a fence, you should instead use runner beans or Fire beans plant.

Support for climbing beans

Runner beans and firebeans belong to the group of climbing beans and need a climbing aid. There are very different options that cost little to no money:

  • For each bean, stick a stick in the soil vertically next to the plant.
  • Build a tent out of climbing beans by ramming a stick into the ground in a circle at a distance of 30cm and tying them together in the middle. One climbing bean is planted per stick.
  • Who one chain-link fence(€ 49.90 at Amazon *) has available can have his / her climbing beans climb on it.
  • If you want to green a wall, you can do this with the help of threads that are fastened and tensioned at the top and bottom with a screw or something similar.
  • Climbing beans also climb horizontally! If you plant your climbing beans on the raised bed or choose a very tall variety, you can use the pole or Fire beans create a green roof by pulling vertical strings that the climbing beans hang along can.
  • If you like it very creative, you can use strings to create shapes and pull the beans along them. However, the beans have to be helped here from time to time so that they do not get lost.

Tips

Both poles and firebeans can do without a climbing aid if they have enough space to hang them. When growing on the balcony, for example, an enchanting curtain of flowers can be created from hanging beans.
