Most of the time waterlogging and root rot are to blame

If only the bottom leaves of the yucca turn yellow and finally dry up, there is none A cause for concern - this phenomenon occurs in connection with the stem formation and thus with the growth of the yucca on. However, suddenly a noticeable number of them change color Leaves yellowin order to then dry up and die, in many cases there is an excess of moisture behind - you meant the watering can too well, which is why the yucca is now literally in the water he drinks. The yucca comes from rather dry regions of the world and therefore does not tolerate too much moisture at all. Permanently wet substrate inevitably leads to root rot and thus to the death of the whole plant. You can recognize root rot by these features:

  • the Leaves go limp and hang down.
  • They eventually turn yellow, dry up and die.
  • The trunk and shoots become soft over time
  • until they finally break off or kink.
  • The whole plant looks dying of thirst even though it is effectively getting enough water.

Often only a radical cut helps

In order to save the affected yucca, usually only a radical cut will help. In doing so, you will most likely not be able to save the whole plant, only parts of it. With a little luck, however, these will sprout again and hopefully grow as splendidly as the mother plant. Here's how you can do it:

  • Drain the affected yucca.
  • Remove any adhering substrate as well as the rotten roots.
  • Also cut away all withered leaves and soft spots above ground.
  • Put the remaining healthy shoots and trunk pieces in fresh substrate.
  • Keep it only slightly moist - spraying with an atomizer is sufficient.

Tips

Do a finger test before each watering. Then you can see whether the yucca actually needs water or not. Put your index finger at least two centimeters deep into the substrate - if it is dry, you cannot water much (!).
