Tips for choosing a location

The purple loosestrife does not only grow into an ornamental plant in the garden bed. You can also cultivate it in the bucket. However, the plant is less suitable for the apartment, unless you can offer it a sun-drenched space. The purple loosestrife loves sunny locations. It grows slowly in the shade and only develops its flowers modestly. A bright, warm terrace facing south is therefore best suited for the bucket.

The right bucket size

With sufficient light and the right care, the purple loosestrife can grow up to 2 m in height. Accordingly, it develops an extensive root ball. So choose a large bucket. You may even have to repot the plant.

Requirements for the substrate

The purple loosestrife feels most comfortable near water. It needs a permanently moist to wet substrate. Wet soil is particularly important when keeping pots, as the plants have no way of getting their supplies from the groundwater. As a rule, conventional garden soil is completely sufficient as a substrate. Mix in a little sand and make sure it has a humic consistency.

Also keep in mind that the purple loosestrife prefers to stand in the blazing sun. Accordingly, the substrate dries out quickly. To save yourself a bit of work when watering, it is best to mix some compost into the soil or apply a layer of mulch. These components store water and keep the substrate moist longer.

Tips

In contrast to many other ornamental plants, the purple loosestrife copes perfectly with waterlogging. By placing the bucket on a base filled with water, it is always adequately supplied. So you save yourself the constant watering.
