Advantages of pre-growing

Sweet corn is only sown outdoors from mid / late May. But impatient gardeners may prefer it. The biggest advantage of this is: The Seeds can germinate and grow under the watchful eye at home.

Once sown too early in the field, the corn can die quickly if exposed to frost. Pulling forward prevents that. Furthermore, strong plants can be grown at home, they will grow faster later and, as a result, develop flowers and fruits more quickly.

Move to home from the end of March / beginning of April

Independent of variety the sweet corn is preferred between the end of March and the end of April. You should sow the seeds at home by the beginning of May at the latest, so that you can put vigorous young plants outdoors in the middle / end of May.

Sow the seeds

Before the sowing the dried seeds are pre-soaked in water for 8 to 10 hours. It would be ideal to put the seeds in a thermos with 20 ° C warm water.

After the pre-soaking it continues like this:

  • At least 10 cm deep pots (forms long taproots) with Sowing soil to fill

Bring the young plants outdoors

  • Row spacing: 40 to 60 cm
  • Plant spacing: 30 to 40 cm

  • Choose a sunny, warm, sheltered place

Tips

Take care when removing them from the nursery pot, the young roots can be up to 40 cm long. Unwind carefully so that you do not injure yourself.
