The correct bleed

This is a must for flowers, because they are sensitive and react very sensitively to incorrect treatment.

  • Always use a sharp knife for cutting.
  • Scissors are not suitable as they will crush the ends of the handles.
  • Flowers with a soft stem, such as tulips or Gerberas, you are just cutting.
  • Are the flower stems hard like roses or Hydrangeas, pull the knife slightly at an angle. This increases the area with which the flowers can absorb water.
  • Branches are also cut in this way. Knocking these flat with a hammer is no longer common, as the shredded tissue causes rot to develop more quickly.

Cut the flowers even if this has already been done by the florist. Then fill the vase with water, being careful to only submerge the stems, not the leaves. Contact with water would cause them to rot quickly, which would affect the shelf life of the flowers.

How often needs to be broached?

  • So that cut flowers last a long time, cleanliness is the top priority. Therefore, the vase should always be very clean and filled with fresh water every day.
  • Rinse the vase thoroughly beforehand. This removes bacteria and prevents the flowers from wilting as quickly.
  • Cut the bouquets of flowers at least every two days, as putrefactive bacteria will develop at the cut.

What else can I do to improve the shelf life?

  • Choose a large enough vase. Flowers don't like to be squeezed into a container.
  • Bouquets can remain tied, as they are then easier to care for.
  • Do not place the flowers in full sun. Due to the warmth of the sun's rays, they evaporate more water than they can absorb and the flowers would wither more quickly.

Tips

Very chalky tap water does not like flowers at all. Add a few splashes of lemon juice or vinegar to the water and the colorful room decorations feel much more comfortable and stay fresh for a long time.
