Young magnolias need a lot of protection

The younger a magnolia tree, the more sensitive it is to cold temperatures. The winter hardiness arises only with age, when the tree has adapted to the prevailing climate and has also been able to develop sufficient resistance. For this reason, you should play it safe and protect younger magnolias with winter protection. Above all, it is important to protect the flat roots, which are therefore located close to the surface of the earth, from frost.

  • Spread a thick layer of bark mulch over the entire root area.
  • This is followed by another thick layer of foliage (e.g. B. of the deciduous magnolia self)
  • As a third layer, brushwood completes the root protection.
  • In severe frost, you can wrap the trunk with fleece and cover the crown with a foil.

From around the beginning of March to mid-March you can - provided the weather is accordingly spring-like - remove the winter protection, but shouldn't clear it yet.

Beware of late frosts

Instead, it applies especially to the early flowering varietiesto follow the weather report regularly and to protect the magnolia from the onset of late frosts. These namely destroy the delicate flower and transform it the fragrant flower ball in brown mud. Bucket magnolias that bloom early should therefore be put into the house overnight, while magnolias that have been planted out should be protected with fleece or foil. Alternatively, you can of course opt for a late-blooming magnolia from the start.

Bucket magnolias hibernate best under cold house conditions, i. H. in a protected and frost-free place at a maximum of 10 ° C. If this is not possible, you can leave the pot in the open with appropriate protective measures.

  • Place the bucket in a sheltered place on a warm south wall.
  • Place the bucket on a thick block of wood.
  • Wrap the vessel with fleece or bubble wrap.
  • Cover the branches with one Burlap sack.(€ 14.29 at Amazon *)

Make sure that the magnolia does not dry out even in winter. The plant must also be watered on frost-free days, but not fertilized.

Tips & Tricks

Incidentally, the particularly hardy magnolias are among the earliest to bloom, but their flowers are just as sensitive to frost as those of all other magnolias.
