Dogwood flowers are usually white

Most dogwood species have white flowers that are clustered together in dold-like, panicle-like or head-shaped inflorescences. The flowers consist of four sepals that are fused with the ovary and also four petals. Some dogwoods also develop yellow (cornel) or slightly pink (red flower dogwood 'Rubra') flowers, only the Swedish dogwood (Cornus suecica) flowers dark purple. With the exception of the very early ones Cornelian cherry most dogwood species have their flowering period between May and June.

The various flower dogwoods bloom particularly profusely

The flower or blossom dogwood in particular are very popular with many gardeners. The actual flowers are quite inconspicuous, only the mostly white or yellow, up to five centimeters long bracts ensure the equally interesting and eye-catching appearance.

American dogwood (Cornus florida)

The slow-growing Cornus florida is one of the early bloomers and, depending on the variety, shows its white or pink flowers before the leaves shoot.

++++ Red dogwood (Cornus florida 'Rubra')

The 'Rubra' variety blooms particularly beautifully and profusely, with pink-red-white flowers up to 12 centimeters in size. The foliage is variegated green and white. This variant blooms between May and June.

The Japanese dogwood does not show its impressive flowers until the end of May. The white, often pink-tinged flowers can be up to nine centimeters in diameter.

Chinese flower dogwood (Cornus kousa var. chinensis)

The Chinese flower dogwood, which often shows its lush white blossoms from the beginning of May and maintains it until July, has the longest flowering time.

Tips

If the Dogwood does not bloom often the only thing that helps is patience: the trees often only bloom at an advanced age between six and nine years.
