Figs love sunny places

South-facing locations that are sheltered from the wind and are exposed to the sun all day are ideal. Even Penumbra tolerates the fig. In airy and cool locations, however, figs do not thrive and do not set any fruit.

When is the fig allowed on the balcony?

As soon as no more ground frosts are to be expected, the Fig tree in the bucket move to the balcony. Gradually get the plant used to the changed conditions and do not expose the fig to full sunlight immediately. If placed directly in the blazing sun from a sheltered room, the plant could be permanently damaged.

Water enough but avoid waterlogging

Since figs are very sensitive to too much water, a balance between moisture and dryness should be maintained:

  • The ball of the pot should always be kept moist.
  • Avoid waterlogging and throw away any water left in the saucer.
  • The ideal irrigation water is low in lime. In areas with very hard water, use soft rainwater or filtered tap water.

Transplant balcony figs regularly

Figs grown in a tub should be repotted in a larger planter about every two years. The root ball is not yet at this point visibly rooted it is sufficient to shake off the old earth and place the fig with new substrate in the previous container.

Wintering of the fig tree

You can find the fig in very sheltered areas hibernate on the balcony. It is essential that you place the tree in a protected corner and ensure that it is adequately protected from the cold.

It is better to keep the fig in a cool room during the winter months. Since the fig loses its leaves in the winter months, a darkened cellar or the garage is also suitable as winter quarters.

The fig also feels at home in the winter garden during the cold season. However, keep in mind that the deciduous plant is not a green plant ornament for the winter garden during this time.
