How does the plant divide?
The most successful is the division of this perennial. In contrast to many other perennials, however, it is not the root system that is divided here, but the rhizomes. The best time to do this is either in early spring or in late autumn. Attention: The Diptam is ready for division at the earliest from the third year of standing. Before that he is not strong enough.

Dig up and share
First, the plant and its roots are dug up. The rhizomes are exposed and then with a knife or a spade shared or severed. Each section that is later planted and is to develop into a new diptame should have at least 1 and preferably 2 buds.
Plant in a new location
After dividing, the rhizome pieces are attached to another Location deep planted. The place should be sunny to partially shaded and protected. The soil there needs to be loosened up well and a drainage system made of pebbles, for example.
Sowing: harvest the seeds yourself
The seeds for that sowing you can harvest yourself if you already own a diptame. Wait until the flowering is over and the fruits with the seeds emerge. When the fruit clusters dry up, the time has come and they can be harvested. This is usually the case with diptam between September and October.
Sow seeds properly
Please note:
- first stratify (are cold germs), for example in the refrigerator (not necessary for direct sowing)
- After stratifying, sow seeds in nutrient-poor and well-drained soil
- do not or hardly cover with sand (light germs)
- ideal germination temperature: 8 to 12 ° C
- average germination time: 180 days
The seeds should not be stored for a long time. It is best to take action immediately after the harvest. Remember: at the sowing it takes 3 to 5 years for the diptame to develop flowers for the first time.
