Create the ditch of light

There are several ways to create a light moat:

  • Slope-like with an even gradient downwards
  • stair-like with several steps
  • step-like with plant stones
  • a mixture of two or more of the above

All variants are ideal for planting. If you decide to use one type of embankment, it is advisable to top up the soil and plants with one Embankment mat to prevent slipping while the plants take root. This is unnecessary with a stepped structure.

Which plants for the light pit?

As the name suggests, a light pit provides light. It is therefore of great importance that you do not grow large plants that block the light. For the light garden, you should therefore use plants that remain small or prune the plants regularly. You should also keep in mind that a ditch of light rarely gets direct sunlight. Therefore, you should put shade-loving plants. It also makes sense to grow hardy plants so that you don't have to replant the light pit every spring.
Above all, the following are possible:

  • Succulents
  • Cushion plants
  • Flowers that stay small and tolerate shade

Carpet-forming plants look particularly beautiful, as they green the entire area in a very short time. Here is a small selection of the most beautiful, shade-loving ground covers:

Surname blossom Heyday particularities
Vinca minor Bluish From May to September Evergreen
ivy Evergreen, poisonous
Runners-forming Waldsteinia yellow From April to June Evergreen
Gold-colored crawler Beautiful leaf pattern, evergreen
Dogwood carpet White May to June Decorative fruits
Caucasus forget-me-nots blue April to June Some varieties with a beautiful leaf pattern
Loquat White May to June Beautiful, red fruits, evergreen
Elven flower White, blue, pink, yellow, red ... April to May Very fine flowers
