When is the best time?

A Maßholder already proves his uncomplicated disposition when it comes to scheduling the pruning. You can use scissors several times a year to give your hedge a neat appearance:

• The best time is in late winter and early spring between late January and early / mid-March
• The alternative date is in autumn shortly before or after the leaf fall
• After Midsummer Day, a slight shape cut is possible by a maximum of a third

If you intend a rejuvenation cut, the legislature has a say. Putting a field maple hedge on the stick is only allowed in the period from 1. October to 28. February. It is important to note that it does not freeze on the appointment itself or that the field maple hedge is under blazing sunlight.

Cutting Instructions - How to Cut Correctly

In contrast to others Maple species, the Acer campestre tolerates pruning with floral serenity. The growth rocket under the deciduous trees even repairs one or the other beginner's mistake in no time on its own. It doesn't have to get that far, because the cut is very simple:

• Sharpen and disinfect the cutting tool in advance
• In the first step, cut off all dead wood at the base
• Thinning out inward-facing, stunted and frozen branches
• In the second step, shorten all the shoots to the desired length
• Ideally, start each cut a short distance from a leaf or bud

The optimal cut strives for a pyramidal shape. When the field maple hedge tapers from the base to the tip, sunlight can reach all branches. This means that fresh shoots and leaves sprout even near the ground, so that the hedge does not become bald. A good guide is cords that you stretch between wooden pegs that you drive in at both ends of the hedge.
