Where does the honey palm come from?

The tree is native to Chile and reaches considerable proportions in the Mediterranean climate. The botanical name is Jubaea chilensis.

Can the honey palm be kept outdoors?

You can plant honey palms outdoors, but not before the plant is at least five years old. Then it can cope well with sub-zero temperatures. Fruits will only develop in a very mild climate.

What distance from other plants should you keep?

Honey palms grow slowly in the first few years. Nevertheless, the planting distance to other plants should be at least 1.50 meters.

In which location does the palm thrive well?

Like all palms, honey palms do best in a very sunny, sheltered location.

Which soil substrate does the honey palm prefer?

Normal garden soil mixed with a little sand or gravel is sufficient.

If you want to keep it as a houseplant, choose a deep container that you bring with you Cactus soil or more special Palm soil to fill.

Is the honey palm hardy?

Honey palms are conditionally hardy. For a short time they can even tolerate temperatures down to minus 15 degrees. Nevertheless, you should take care of winter protection, especially if the palm is in a somewhat drafty place. Cover the ground with a mulch or fleece material and wrap the leaves around as a precaution.

How is the honey palm propagated?

Propagation occurs through the seed called coquito. Translated it means “coconut” because the taste is similar to that of coconut.

Can the palm be replanted?

Older specimens in the field should not be replanted if possible, unless they are in a very unfavorable place. To do this, the long tap root must be completely dug up. Unfortunately, most older honey palms do not survive transplanting.

Honey palms planted in the tub must be transplanted every few years, whenever the pot becomes too small and the roots stick out of the ground.

In the first few years, transplanting is seldom necessary because of the slow growth.

What should you watch out for when keeping it as a container plant?

Water the plant only sparsely in winter so that the root ball does not dry out completely.
