Propagation by sowing

You can certainly grow elephant ears from seeds. This is particularly easy with seeds from specialist shops, because these can be sown immediately. You will have to wait patiently for some time for seeds from your own plants. For pollination you need two plants that are close together. After about eight to twelve weeks, the seed pods form, which still need some time to mature.

Thoroughly clean any adhering pulp from the seeds so that they do not go moldy. As a dark germ, the seeds should be covered with earth, alternatively they germinate between two moist paper tissues. This takes about four weeks. The seedlings need plenty of light and regular watering for them to thrive.

Propagation by means of bulbs

The easiest way of propagation is to plant bulbs. When you repot your elephant's ear in the spring, see if there are any small daughter bulbs on the

Mother onion have formed. Carefully peel off the small onions without damaging them or the parent tuber.

Refrain from repotting the elephant ear especially for propagation or just looking for daughter bulbs out of curiosity, this is not good for your elephant ear and it grows more slowly. Plant the daughter bulbs individually in separate pots with poor substrate. Do not start watering until a few days later.

Propagation by leaf cuttings

Pulling leaf cuttings is a little tricky with this otherwise easy-care plant, as they rot easily if the substrate is too moist. Carefully cut some sturdy leaves from your elephant's ear and place them in pots with moderately moist soil.
