These two early bloomers are not 'green'

Tulips and Daffodils are both early bloomers. But they have different requirements and in a vase they certainly do not get along. The troublemakers who don't like to conform are those poisonous daffodils. They keep competitors at bay by eliminating a mucilage that is harmful to other plants.

The mucilage is contained in the stems. It penetrates the vase water as soon as the daffodils have been cut and placed in the vase. Tulip stems in the same vase fall victim to the mucilage. The substances penetrate the ducts and clog them so that water can no longer flow to the flowers. The result: the tulips wither prematurely.

Tips to make them friends with each other

There are two ways to have daffodils and tulips together in a vase without the tulips having to lose out. The first method goes like this: Take the daffodils and hold them by the ends of the stems under a jet of hot water. The ends of the stems then close and the mucilage can no longer escape.

The second method is as follows:

  • Cut the daffodils
  • in a separate vase put with water
  • remove from vase after 24 hours
  • place in the vase with the tulips
  • Disadvantage: Daffodils must not be cut again, which reduces their flowering time

Color design ideas for a bouquet of tulips and daffodils

Yellow ones work wonderfully Daffodils together with flaming red tulips. White-flowered daffodils such as poet's daffodils together with pink-colored tulips provide romantic accents. Mixed bouquets of white, yellow, orange, red, pink and purple flowers look fantastic too!

Tips & Tricks

To keep them in the vase for a long time, the tulips and daffodils should be placed in a cool place. The water in the vase is changed daily and a little lemon juice or baking soda nourishes the flowers well and keeps them fresh for longer.
