Sweet lupine - the alternative to soy

The demand for protein-containing plant-based foods is increasing steadily. After soy was rejected by many vegetarians because of the genetic modification, the producers turned to lupins.

For the large-scale cultivation, however, only the sweet is usedlupine used. With the popular Perennial plant This plant must not be confused in the garden.

Sweet lupins of which there are yellow, white and blue varieties do not contain any toxins as a result of breeding. The ornamental plants, however, are poisonous and must not be consumed under any circumstances.

Grow sweet lupins in your own garden

In general, sweet lupins can also be found in your own garden plants. The demands on care are the same as those of the ornamental lupine.

Growing sweet lupins for personal consumption is only worthwhile if there is enough space in the garden. If there are children in the house, the non-toxic sweet lupins can be a good alternative to poisonous ornamental plants.

Sweet lupins are only suitable to a limited extent as ornamental plants, as they were primarily grown on the seeds blossom doesn't matter that much.

Benefits of growing lupins instead of soy

There are several points in favor of growing sweet lupins for protein supply:

  • Needs little care
  • Is productive
  • Is largely disease resistant
  • Is tasteless

In Germany, the blue lupine is mainly grown for food production. It has been shown to be disease resistant to viruses. The cultivation of yellow and white lupins, on the other hand, has almost come to a standstill.

Lupins in animal feeding

In the meantime, the blue sweet lupine is often used as a substitute for soy meal when feeding pigs. Studies have shown that this type of feeding is particularly worthwhile in areas where the soil is poor and sandy.

Tips & Tricks

Lupine flour can be used just like soy flour without affecting the taste. There is even a tofu substitute made from lupins. It is sold under the name Lupino in specialist shops.
