When should you plant a hedge?

The type of hedge is crucial

Container plants

Hedge plants with balls

These are pricked out of the ground before being transported to the garden center or right in front of your eyes in the nursery. They grew up in the open without a protective flower pot and are therefore relatively robust. Hedge plants with balls are planted during the dormancy period, which lasts from September to May.

In the case of evergreen bale goods, the period is significantly shorter. You should plant these plants in September or October so that they take root before the winter months.

Think about the planting pruning. The bushes that have lost roots when digging out compensate for this by sparse supply of the upper parts of the plant. The pruning ensures that they sprout vigorously and healthily in spring.

Bare-rooted shrubs

These come out of the ground without any protective soil. As a rule, only deciduous shrubs are offered with bare roots. Since part of the bale was lost during excavation and transport, these have Bushes with fewer fine roots than plants that you bought in containers or at least with balls to have. In order for the hedge plants to grow well, it is important to plant bare-root crops only in the cold season, preferably in the months of September or October.
