Protect only young plants from frost
Once a false jasmine has grown well, it is completely hardy. You should only water it occasionally when it is very dry in spring and winter.
It is different with false jasmine, which you only get in autumn planted or off Propagated cuttings themselves to have.
You should protect young shrubs from frost in the first winter. The roots are then usually not yet so deeply penetrated into the ground that the plant is not yet completely hardy.
Protect against frost and dehydration with mulch blankets
To protect against frost, apply a mulch blanket to young shrubs in autumn. For this, you can use organic materials from the garden:
- compost
- leaves
- Lawn cut (without flowers!)
- straw
A mulch cover also prevents the soil from drying out too much. Weeds cannot emerge, which makes gardening much easier. The decomposing mulch material also provides new nutrients.
A useful measure is to remove the fallen leaves of the false jasmine
Just leave it under the bushes. It works like a mulch blanket and thus offers good protection against very low temperatures. At the same time it fertilizes the soil.
False jasmine loses all leaves in autumn
False jasmine is a deciduous shrub. It forms a lot of leaves in spring. They change color in autumn Leaves yellowish and fall off. This is not an indication of a disease, but a completely natural process in many hardy plants.
If you False jasmine as a hedge want to plant, you should take this into account. In winter, the hardy ornamental shrub does not form a dense screen.

False jasmine used to be grown in cottage gardens because the many flowers attract bees and insects. That is why false jasmine is popularly called peasant jasmine.
