The best time is in autumn
At the same time as the leaves fall, your spherical maple sinks into a brief period of dormancy. In the period between October and January, the tree is therefore well prepared for the rigors of a change of location. At least half of the leaves should have lost the crown. A frost-free soil and temperatures above freezing point are fundamental criteria for carrying out the work.

Cutting back eases the strain for the gardener and tree
Before you get down to digging up the roots, we recommend one Cut back the crown. Thin out 3 to 4 of the thickest branches and any dead wood. On the young ball maple, shorten all branches by a quarter to a third of their length in order to compensate for the loss of the root mass. Since the pruning reduces the weight, the following work is associated with less effort.
Step-by-step instructions - this is how it works
The reasons for the change of location may be varied - the procedure always follows the same procedure. How to replant your spherical maple in an exemplary manner:
- With the freshly sharpened spade the Tree grate cut off in a circle
- The radius corresponds to at least three quarters of the crown diameter
- Extend the cut circle to a 10 cm wide trench
- Cut off the remaining roots in the ground from the trench
Lift the spherical maple out of the ground and pack the root ball into one Burlap sack.(€ 14.29 at Amazon *) The more soil sticks to the roots, the faster the tree will grow in the new location. The planting hole ideally corresponds to twice the volume of the root ball. Enrich the excavation with compost and Horn shavings(€ 32.93 at Amazon *) at. It is important to note that the previous planting depth is not changed. Penetrating watering rounds off the expert process of the transplanting work.
Tips
While transplanting proves to be a difficult undertaking for ball maple, for Japanese maple in the tub it is regular Repot Compulsory program. So that the roots do not get into distress in the tightly measured substrate volume, the tree should be relocated to a larger pot at intervals of 2 to 3 years.
