If you want to grow a hedge in the garden, you need to prune the privet at least twice a year. Otherwise the shrub will only grow upwards and hardly branch out in the lower areas.

It therefore takes some time for the hedge to reach the desired height.

Budding twice a year

Privet drives twice a year. The first shoot is much stronger than the second. The first growth spurt occurs in spring, the second from the end of May.

When the privet doesn't grow

Leaves the growth of the privet or grows if it does not, there can be various possible causes:

  • bad location
  • Substrate not ideal
  • Fungal attack
  • Pest infestation

Privet grows faster in the right location

Privet does not like shadows. It needs sufficient light for the formation of shoots and leaves. Therefore, if possible, plant it in partially shaded or sunny locations.

It does not tolerate complete dryness or waterlogging. Make sure that the soil is well drained and that it stores enough water but is not too wet. If necessary, create drainage before planting.

Fertilize Do not do too much and too often. The privet does not get an oversupply of nutrients.

Fungal attack and pests

Diseases are rare and the privet usually copes well with them on its own. Only the black weevil can be a danger if it occurs very frequently. Its larvae eat the roots and prevent the shrub from being supplied with water and nutrients.

Tips

Privet is called in most cases hedge planted in the garden. But it also looks good as a single shrub or topiary. The shrub is so easy on pruning that you can use it as a bonsai can pull.
