Here are the instructions for the offshoot:
- Fill a sufficiently large planter with high-quality, nutrient-rich Potting soil.
- Cut off several fresh shoots from the mother tree. The length of these shoots should be at least 15 centimeters. Incidentally, it does not matter if the shoots are still green or perhaps even show slight woody growth.
- Put the cuttings in the prepared tub.
- Water the earth vigorously.
- Place the planter in a light and frost-protected location.
- Keep the soil constantly moist in the following time.
- You can easily check whether the propagation works: If new leaves appear soon, the associated cuttings have started. Otherwise you are dealing with a "sterile" drive.
- As soon as the offshoots have started, give each plant its own container.
- In summer, place the planter with the walnut trees outside in a sunny location. The soil should never dry out - so make sure to water your little ones regularly.
- Towards winter, you should move your young trees to a frost-proof warehouse. After all, the plants are not yet sufficiently winter hardy. It will take at least two years until then.
More tips for walnut propagation with cuttings
- First, always put several cuttings in a planter. You can never know in advance how many offshoots will actually develop roots. Planting multiple shoots increases the likelihood that at least one of them will become something.
- Under no circumstances should you transplant your cuttings into the garden too early. After all, walnut trees are very frost-sensitive plants that are very light freeze to death can. This is especially true for young trees.
- Propagate a walnut tree only if you have the necessary space in the garden. Eventually, the tree grows up to 15 meters (or maybe even higher) over the years. After decades, it also takes up a lot of space in terms of width.
