Wintering of young plants

The young plants of the hardy varieties are also sometimes quite sensitive to frost. The roots, which are still tender, do not tolerate persistent moisture in any case. One wintering in a frost-free and relatively dry environment is therefore advisable. In this way, the sensitive plants can continue to be supplied with water according to their needs without fear of root rot. From April, the vigorous young plants can then be planted outdoors.

The wintering of potted plants

You can overwinter potted plants in a similar way to young plants. Above all, it is important that their roots are protected from frost, because if they freeze through, the plant dies. The biggest problem for bitterroot, however, is persistent moisture, it leads to root rot.

If you have decided to buy a non-hardy bitterroot variety, you should at least plant it in a pot or tub for the winter. Of course, you can also cultivate bitterroot in a planter all year round. With its low growth, it is ideal as a balcony or terrace planting, but less so for the windowsill of your living room.

The most important winter tips for bitterroot:

  • Overwinter container plants and young plants frost-free

Tips

Also overwinter the young plants of the hardy varieties in a frost-free room, they are still quite sensitive.
