With younger ornamental grasses, you should definitely protect the soil from frost by adding leaves or placing fir branches around the eyrie.
Tie up fronds in autumn
Pampas grass is not cut in autumn. The fronds are tied together at the top and only removed in spring when new shoots begin.
The recommendation, the grass above tie together, has a background. In winter it is often very humid, especially when there is a blanket of snow. If the moisture penetrates the eyrie of the pampas grass, it begins to rot. The tied stalks protect the inside of the plant from moisture.
Hibernate pampas grass in the bucket
Pampas grass in a pot needs special winter protection, as the earth freezes through much faster here than outdoors.
Place the bucket in a sheltered corner on the terrace or balcony. Place wood or other insulating material underneath. Wrap the pampas grass with fleece, foil or fir branches.
You can also overwinter the plant in a cool, bright spot indoors if you have enough space for it.
Tips
If pampas grass grows in very windy and unprotected locations, it can make sense to bring it into the house in winter. The rhizome is used for this excavated and stored in the basement with some earth. It is replanted in spring when frosts are no longer to be expected.
