Creative and inexpensive: fire bowl made from rims

“Correct” fire bowls are rarely available for less than 100 EUR - so it's no wonder that so many people are looking for one cheaper alternative look around. Old, no longer used car rims can be excellently used for this purpose: The holes inside the fire receive sufficient oxygen and can crackle cheerfully. Suitable rims are available in stores for less than 30 EUR - and create a cozy campfire like a conventional fire bowl.

Which rims can be used as a fire bowl?

However, you cannot convert every rim into a fire bowl: models made of aluminum or Fiber composite materials such as carbon or kevlar are not suitable for due to their inadequate heat resistance a fireplace. Carbon, for example, is only heat-resistant up to around 110 ° C. Instead, it is best to use steel rims that are robust, durable and, moreover, fireproof to the desired extent. They are available in different sizes: if you want to make a particularly large fire, you can use classic truck rims.

How to convert rims into a fire bowl

But before you put the steel rim on the lawn, fill it with wood and set it on fire, you must first of all the floor fireproof design. For this purpose, dig a pit about ten centimeters deep, the dimensions of which are slightly larger than the diameter of the rim. Fill the pit with gravel and place the rim on it. Now layer the wood and light it up - the rim fire bowl is ready. With a grill grate on top, you can convert this improvised fireplace into a usable grill in no time at all. You can also paint the rim with a heat-resistant paint (thermal paint or stove paint) and thus increase both the appearance and the durability of your extremely cheap fire bowl.
