All annual shoots are cut back so that they are no longer than a meter.
In the following years all shoots are cut in half. This promotes the new shoots of young shoots, on which Nashi pears will later grow.
Care cut
You should also remove drooping branches. Fruits that grow on this do not get enough light and therefore stay small. They also don't taste as sweet as Nashis that have been in full sun.
Nashi trees tolerate pruning without any problems. Spring and autumn are best for pruning.
However, you can carry out maintenance cuts all year round. There is not much you can do wrong. If you want to harvest a lot of apple pears, cut too much rather than too little. It is only important that the inflorescences get enough sun.
Cut the nashi pear into shape
So that the Nashi pears are a decorative eye-catcher in the garden, you should cut the trees into shape. The following are available for this purpose Tree shapes at:
- pyramid
- Hollow crown
- Three-load crown
For trees that are in the open ground planted start pruning in the first year in order to obtain a beautiful and easy-to-care-for shape.
Thin out inflorescences
Nashis form in fruit clusters. Each clump consists of ten to twelve flowers, from which just as many fruits will develop when properly fertilized and the weather is good.
Because too many Nashis do not have enough space next to each other and therefore not ripe you have to thin out the fruit clusters. Leave only two small apple pears on each fruit cluster.
Tips & Tricks
Tending the nashi pear in the bucket is not just about regularly pruning the tree. You should tie the shoots to supporting pillars so that they do not break under the weight of the fruit. In winter, place the bucket as cool as possible but frost-free. Nashis are hardy outdoors.
