The ideal time for the action

In terms of time, the conifers do not have to be taken into account, the hedge could theoretically be pulled out of the ground all year round. But it's not that simple.

To protect native bird species, extensive cutting and removal of hedges is necessary in the period from 1. March to 30th September prohibited. Shrubs are popular breeding grounds. It may well be that there are different special regulations for removing hedges in your state. Check with the relevant office before you look for the saw grab, otherwise a hefty fine could follow.

Also pay attention to the weather. If the ground is frozen, digging out the roots is difficult. However, you can also tackle the above-ground part of the work when the temperature is below zero if there is no other alternative in terms of time.

Remove branches and cut through the trunk

In a private garden, a large conifer cannot be pulled out of the ground as a whole. Heavy equipment is required for this. If you work your way up piece by piece, you will also achieve your goal. It starts with removing the branches close to the trunk.

  • work in the lower area
  • until part of the trunk is "naked" and easily accessible
  • Cut through the trunk at about 80 cm ground level

Of course, every single conifer in the hedge must be processed in this way. Put the removed parts of the tree to one side so that you do not hinder them in further work steps.

Exposing the roots

  1. Put with one spade the roots as free as possible.
  2. You can cut through smaller roots with a spade and pull them out of the earth.
  3. Move the trunk back and forth to take advantage of the leverage. This loosens the root ball.
  4. Then pull out the trunk and its roots. If that is not possible with bare hands, you can tie a rope around the trunk and pull the rest out using a tractor or other vehicle.

Tips

If you fill the holes with compost, the soil gets the nutrients it needs for subsequent planting.

Dispose of the hedge

Even if the hedge was perfectly healthy, it does not belong in the compost, because a large proportion of coniferous wood makes the compost very acidic. But this is only tolerated by a few plants. Nothing speaks against small amounts of it. The acidic effect can be neutralized by adding lime.
