How are cherimoyas planted?

The seeds are simply placed in small pots with Potting soil and covered with a two-centimeter layer of earth.

After emergence, which can take up to two months, the plants are placed in a warm but not sunny position.

Depending on their growth, the cherimoyas are planted in pots after one or two years.

In which soil do they thrive best?

The cherimoya does not need much nutrients. Is well suited Cactus soil. Mix simple garden soil with sand.

When is the best time to plant?

the sowing takes place in winter, when the fruits are ripe and the seeds can be released for sowing.

You should plant the cherimoyas in pots in spring, before the plant sprouts.

Which location is ideal?

Young trees like it warm but not sunny. Mature trees do best in full sun.

When can the fruits be harvested?

It takes several years for the tree to develop flowers for the first time. Only then can pollination be carried out.

The fruits of the cherimoya are in late autumn to winter ready to harvest.

They only develop their full aroma when they are fully ripe. Then the edible skin turns brown and the pulp gives way when you apply slight pressure.

Cherimoyas are self-fertilizing and are propagated by seeds. The rather large black kernels are simply put in a pot with potting soil.

The seeds are poisonous and should not be eaten.

Since there are no natural pollinators in our latitudes, pollination must be done by hand:

• In the evening, brush pollen from the male flower with a brush
• Store brushes in a cool place
• Transferred pollen to female flower in the morning

Tips & Tricks

In the wild in South America, the fast-growing trees reach heights of up to seven meters. They don't get that big in the bucket. Even so, you have to take the space requirements into account, because you have to overwinter the non-frost-hardy plants in the house.
