Raised beds can be made from many materials

Many raised beds are finished in the classic way with a wooden border. Basically, however, you have the choice between many different materials, because it is not the wood that makes the raised bed - but its height and the Filling. A traditionally filled raised compost bed offers a whole range of advantages, from the higher temperature in the bed to the supply of nutrients. But whether the bed box is made of wood, stone or metal is secondary and entirely up to your ideas.

wood

A raised bed with a border wood should be carefully with waterproof foil or fleece to separate the always moist bed filling from the wood and thus to keep it from rot. Usually wooden slats are used for the construction of raised beds, but palisades, planks, whole trunks or thick branches, hazelnut branches or wickerwork made of willow twigs.

stone

Much more durable than a wooden raised bed are beds with a border stone. For this you can take natural or concrete blocks and erect them either in dry construction or in a mortar wall. A foundation is also absolutely necessary. Raised stone beds can also be clad very well, for example with wood.

plastic

A plastic raised bed is perfect for the balcony or terrace due to its low weight. However, there are also large raised bed borders made of plastic for the garden, which are very durable and withstand wind and weather. However, they are not particularly ecological.

metal

A special eye-catcher is always a raised bed with a border metal - especially if it has an age-old patina. Raised beds made of Corten steel, for example, are very tasteful and extremely durable.

Tips

If you want to build a new raised bed, you don't necessarily have to buy the necessary materials at high prices. Upcycling is the magic word or, in German: Make new out of old! You can create great raised bed borders from a wide variety of starting materials.
