Only apples harvested when ripe can be stored

Anyone who buys their apples in the supermarket will rarely find themselves in the position of having to store them for longer. It looks different with a boskop tree in your own garden. Sometime in October or November the apples are ripe and need to be picked.

So that the fruits can be stored for a long time, they must not be taken from the tree too early.

Short storage at room temperature

Boskop apples, which are intended for quick consumption, can be stored in a fruit basket at room temperature. However, the drier the air and the warmer the room, the faster the fruit will shrivel.

Refrigerator extends shelf life

The refrigerator is also suitable as a kind of interim solution.

So that the apples retain their firmness for a long time, they should be wrapped with a damp cloth and placed in the fruit and vegetable drawer.

If other fruit is stored in the vegetable drawer, however, this could become a problem. The boskop secretes a ripening gas that causes neighboring fruits to spoil more quickly.

Permanent accommodation for the winter

For long-term storage, Boskop needs a place that is cool, dark and has a high level of humidity. A basement room with ventilation is ideal, as are cool but frost-free garden sheds and garages.

How to store the Boskop correctly

  1. First, sort out any rotten and damaged apples. Oversized fruits are also unsuitable for longer storage.
  2. Place the apples on a fruit rack or in flat boxes. You can lay out these with wood wool or corrugated cardboard beforehand. If you are using taller boxes, you should separate several layers with corrugated cardboard to avoid pressure points.
  3. If necessary, you can set up water bowls in the room to increase the humidity.
  4. Check the stored apples weekly. Sort out rotten apples immediately so that the rot cannot spread to other fruits.

Tips

Some apples that cannot be stored are still easy to process into applesauce.
