Calathea species: Calathea orbifolia

Calathea ornata

Its leaves are dark green on the upper side and provided with symmetrical pink stripes that are somewhat reminiscent of pinstripes: the species name ornata does not mean “adorned” for nothing. The underside of the sheet of Calathea ornata is colored dark red. The Beauty Star ’variety, in particular, has very beautiful leaf markings. The plant becomes more wide than it is tall: a low 40 to 50 cm is the final height of the decorated basket margin. For this, however, it develops all the longer leaves - one can be as much as 60 cm long.

Calathea warscewiczii

the Calathea warscewiczii comes from the tropical regions of Central America. The velvety dark green leaves have a light green or reddish leaf markings and are dark red on the underside. Calathea warscewiczii often forms brilliant white flowers in our latitudes in January or February. The plant needs more space than most other Calathea species because it can be up to 200 cm high and also very wide.

Calathea rufibarba

Calathea makoyana is also known as "peacock basket marante" because the leaf spots are reminiscent of peacock eyes. The foliage of the plant is particularly nested and therefore very dense. It grows up to 75 cm high.

Calathea roseoptica

The rounded leaves of the Calathea roseoptica grow particularly large, are light green and have a dark green leaf margin. The artistic drawing of the leaves can take on different colors, with the ‘Dottie’ variety, for example, it sets strong pink accents. The underside of the leaf of the up to 50 cm high Calathea roseoptica is colored purple. It is common in large parts of South America. Other popular varieties are, for example, ‘Corona’ or ‘Suprisestar’.

Calathea crocata

The top of the sheet of the Calathea crocata is blue-green in color, while the underside of the leaves takes on a purple color. It does not have a conspicuous drawing on the leaves. For the Calathea crocata there is also a higher probability in our latitudes of developing their yellow-orange flowers. The ‘Bicajoux’ variety is also special because it flowers pink. Another popular variety is the ‘White Star’. Calathea crocata becomes a maximum of 60 cm high.

Calathea leopardina

Of the Calathea leopardina pointed, light green leaves are formed that have a dark green variegation. It is one of the more subtle Calathea species. The underside of the leaves of the up to 75 cm tall plant is discreetly colored light green.
